I've been looking through our email correspondence for the six months you were coaching me and I am overwhelmed with gratitude. I wasn't really aware of how much I have changed until I reviewed my day-to-day progress. I can see where I was when I started working with you, where I am now, and how I got here. It's a tribute to your teaching methods that the changes have been so gradual and easy that I didn't realize, until now, have far I have come.
When we started, back at the end of May, I weighed 210 pounds (on a good day). I wasn't completely house-bound, but I was not very active physically. If the weather was cold or wet, or I just got a late start, I didn't go out. Because of my vision problems, I found walking in midtown Manhattan difficult, especially at night or in bad weather. I didn't have much enthusiasm for doing anything productive. I didn't like the way I felt, but I couldn't figure out what to do about it. Fortunately, I followed my wife Jane's suggestion to ask for your help.
Starting with that first consultation, when you evaluated my situation, I felt confident that you could show me how to change and improve. You gave me attainable goals for improving my health and my physical condition, congratulated me when I took my first steps and encouraged me to do a little bit more -- and a little bit more after that. You gave suggestions for things I could do, bit by bit, to keep changing my diet. Never did I feel pressured or deprived. Thanks to your up-beat, subtle guidance, I began learning from my own experiences: walking farther, exercising more, eating better and feeling better.
You were not "holding my hand" but I never felt that I was working alone. I reported to you by email every night before going to bed: what I did that day, what I ate, what I felt. And, once a week, we talked on the phone and discussed what I'd accomplished and what I planned to do in the week ahead. I had somebody in my corner, someone I was accountable to, someone who taught me how establish and maintain regular activity schedule. And because you were my coach, not my drill sergeant, I found that when my schedule was disrupted I could adjust and improvise. Missing a gym session, or losing a whole day, or eating too much junk at a social event, didn't have to create a perminent condition. I could turn the page and keep going.
During this past month, I've been having my regular check-ups with my doctors. My cardiologist, my ophthalmologist, my urologist, my internist, my dentist, and my therapist. All of them were impressed by the improvement I've made and impressed by how you've helped me. The doctor I saw yesterday put me on the scale and said: "An even 200 with clothes on! You want a challenge? I'll see you in four months. Think you can make it 190 by then?" I said I was sure I could -- and I know I will because you've showed me how to do it on my own.
So where am I now? I am walking the city streets confidently. I am out in the winter weather running errands, walking to and from the gym. I am enthusiastically working on the revision of my novel which I had put on the shelf. And everybody I haven't seen for a while tells me how great I look. I feel brighter and more energetic than I have in years.
Now that the holiday season is ending, with all its schedule interruptions, I'll be settling into my new weekly routine. My anchors will be my Tuesday and Thursday morning one-hour gym classes: aerobics, free weights, floor weights, abdominal and lower body exercises. I'll be getting in two more gym days solo during the week -- plus some long walks. And I'll continue working every day on my book.
